Pineapple Buying Guide: The Tropical Crown Jewel

The Spiky Sweetheart of the Tropics 🍍

Pineapples don’t just look like royalty—they taste like it too! This tropical superstar packs a punch of sunshiney sweetness with a hint of tang, wrapped in a tough, spiky armor. But don’t let the intimidating exterior fool you; beneath that rough shell lies juicy, golden perfection.

Fun fact: Pineapples are actually hundreds of berries fused together around a central core. Mind blown? Mine too.

Pineapple Varieties (Yes, There’s More Than One!) 🍍

  1. Smooth Cayenne – The classic grocery store pineapple. Sweet, slightly acidic, and great for eating fresh or grilling.
  2. Golden Sweet (MD2) – Extra juicy, low acidity, and absurdly sweet. The VIP of pineapples.
  3. Queen Victoria – Petite, golden, and perfect for small households. Less fibrous, more flavor.
  4. Red Spanish – Firmer, tangier, and ideal for cooking (hello, Caribbean dishes!).

What to Look For: 🔍

Color – Golden-yellow at the base (green is okay if it smells sweet!). Avoid all-green pineapples—they’re underripe.
Smell – A sweet, fruity aroma at the base = ripe and ready. No smell? No deal.
Leaves – A ripe pineapple’s inner leaves should pull out easily (but not too easily!).
Firmness – Slight give when squeezed (like a ripe avocado), but not mushy.
Sound – A ripe pineapple should sound full when tapped, not hollow.

What to Avoid: 🚫

🚫 Mold or dark spots – Especially near the base.
🚫 Fermented smell – If it smells like booze, it’s overripe.
🚫 Dry, brittle leaves – A sign it’s been sitting too long.

How Pineapples Are Sold 🛒

Pineapples strut into stores in more outfits than a pop star—here’s how to spot them:

Whole Pineapples

  • With Crown (Classic Style) – The iconic look, leaves and all. Price usually by unit, not weight.
  • Pre-Trimmed (“Ready-to-Eat”) – Shaved of spines (but still need coring). Slightly pricier for the convenience.
  • Mini Pineapples – Adorable personal-sized Queens (perfect for 1-2 people).

Pre-Cut Options (For Lazy/Late-Night Snackers)

  • Halves or Quarters – Plastic-wrapped in produce section
  • Chunks/Spears – Sold in clamshells (check for browning edges)
  • Frozen Rings – Ideal for smoothies or DIY Dole Whip
  • Canned – Just eat after opening or make desserts with it after draining the liquid

Pro Tips:

  • Peak Season = March-July (cheaper and sweeter!)
  • Oddball Finds : Canned rings, pineapple juice, or even living plants (try growing your own!).

How to Cut a Pineapple (Without Losing a Finger ⚠️) 🔪

A standard kitchen knife is sufficient and I recommend a cutting board. Some fancy humans also use a corer to remove the fibrous core. I personally eat the core too as I like the extra fibre but it’s up to you. I’ll explain how to cut a pineapple with just a knife.

  • Lop off the top and bottom – Stand it upright for stability.
  • Slice off the skin – From the upright position, slice off the skin
  • Half the pineapple lengthwise – Make a cut to expose the core
  • Removing the core– Make a 2 cuts in a V shape pattern to remove the core
  • Cut into shape – Now you’re left with only the edible parts and you can further cut into the shape you want. Dicing into bite sized pieces is common

(Pro tip: Save the core for smoothies—it’s packed with bromelain, a natural meat-tenderizing enzyme!)

Storage Tips (Because Nobody Eats a Whole Pineapple in One Sitting… Right?)

  • Whole pineapple – Store at room temp for 1-2 days to enhance sweetness, then refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Cut pineapple – Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • Freezing – Cube and freeze for smoothies or cocktails (it’ll last 6 months!).

Cooking with Pineapple 🍽️

Pineapple isn’t just for snacking—it’s a culinary powerhouse!

Sweet Treats:

  • Grilled pineapple – Caramelized with a sprinkle of cinnamon or chili powder.
  • Pineapple upside-down cake – A retro classic that deserves a comeback.
  • Sorbet or popsicles – Blend with coconut milk for a creamy tropical treat.

Savory Magic:

  • Hawaiian pizza – Controversial? Yes. Delicious? Also yes.
  • Pineapple salsa – Dice with jalapeños, cilantro, and lime for a killer taco topper.
  • Teriyaki pineapple chicken – The bromelain tenderizes the meat while adding sweetness.
Me grilling pineapple. I know I told you to cut off the skin but I usually just eat it.

Why Pineapples Deserve a Spot in Your Diet 🌟

  • Digestive aid – Bromelain helps break down protein.
  • Immune booster – Loaded with vitamin C (more than oranges, pound for pound!).
  • Hydrating – About 86% water—nature’s juicy candy.
When I need to act like an alpha, I hold a pineapple.
